Juicy Ideas Collegiate Competition Update, October 20, 2008 -
Juicy Ideas launched October 13th at noon with two participating teams from the Gorge region. They have until October 23rd to complete and upload a video of a product they've created using a throw away item - baling twine. To see the launch video click here.
Juicy Ideas (formerly Creative Juice) is a collegiate competition which will challenge student teams to create value while communicating a message of environmental responsibility through the use of imagination, innovation and creativity around the use of a "throw-away" item. Teams will record their experience via video and upload to YouTube for judging. Click on the image to find out more.

GTA Announces New Board of Directors- The Gorge Technology Alliance has elected a new board of directors for 2008. The board includes Lee Ast, Mark Daly, Dave Fenwick, Mark Flaming, Kent Heighton, Mary Kramer, Gary Rains, Steve Sliwa, and Nancy White.
Columbia River Gorge, OR February 11, 2008- Region 9 Workforce Response Team announces the continued availability of Employer Workforce Training Funds. Existing businesses, business consortia, associations, labor
organizations or private non-profits operating in Hood River, Gilliam,
Sherman, Wasco and Wheeler Counties may be eligible. Applicants should be in a traded sector cluster, be a healthcare organization, or in occupations with recognized skill shortages. Businesses interested in applying for training grant funds should talk with a staff representative from EWTF/WRT before spending time on the application. A consultation can be requested by contacting Robin Cope, EWTF/WRT Coordinator, 541-296-8080.

Carson, WA January 17, 2008- Columbia PhytoTechnology, LLC of Cason, WA has received funding from the Washington Technology Center. Columbia PhytoTechnology is working with researcher Dr. Kerry Ringer of the Washington State University, Prosser Irrigated Agricultural Research and Extension Center to develop an innovative dehydration technology for nutraceutical and food ingredients. WSU received $45,334 in Phase I Research and Technology Development funding from Washington Technology Center for the project titled "Radiant Zone Drying: Energy Efficient, Economical, and High Quality Liquid Drying Technology for Nutraceutical and Food Ingredients."Read more...
Columbia River Gorge January 02, 2008- Gorge high tech companies were highlighted in the latest edition of the Oregon Business Magazine. An article written by Michelle Rafter begins "Forget the storied orchards and iconic wind sailors. Dozens of tech companies producing everything from unmanned aircraft to solar energy are finding the Columbia River Gorge is the place to do business." Columbia River Gorge January 01, 2008- The Gorge Technology Alliance has formed a partnership with the Software Association of Oregon.
The partnership was formed to work cooperatively on efforts to support development of the technology industry in the Gorge. Cooperative initiatives will include providing educational opportunites, special events with local and non-local speakers, and training of technology professionals. Through SAO Techstart, we will also be working cooperatively to help connect industry and education both on K-12 and community college levels. Learn more about the SAO at http://www.sao.org.
Klickitat County, WA December 05, 2007- The Port of Klickitat has hired Marc Thornsbury as their new Executive Director. Rodger Ford, President of the Port Commission, said that Thornsburg brings the right mixture of skills and experience to the Port. Thornsbury noted that he is "eager to work with the Port Commission and the residents of Klickitat County to develop the top-notch properties and facilities that will attract business and industry to this wonderful area."
Seattle, WA, November 27, 2007- Seattle Business Monthly named Steve Sliwa with Insitu CEO of the Year. Randy Woods with Seattle Business Monthly writes: "Insitu, Inc., a small, 13-year-old firm in the even smaller Columbia Gorge town of Bingen, has
quietly-some would say stealthily-risen to become one of the top producers of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance. [...] Much of the credit for the company's meteoric rise can be given to Steve Sliwa, a commercial pilot and aeronautical engineer who joined Insitu in 2001 as its CEO." Columbia River Gorge, November 1, 2007- The Hood River Transportation District (CAT) received a two year grant from ODOT to run bus service between The Dalles and Hood River. Still in the test phase, there will be daily morning and evening runs between the two cities, arriving by 8 am and leaving after 5. If CAT is able to obtain another vehicle to support this service, a mid day run will be added. Once a week round trip service to Portland (MAX, OHSU and Clackamas Town Center) will be starting soon as well. For more information, contact Dan Schwanz at 541-296-7595 or 541-386-4202. Bend, OR October 3, 2007 - The U.S. Export Assistance Center will be hosting an "Export Strategies, Tools, and Techniques" seminar from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Shilo Inn in Bend. The seminar provides information and resources to help established businesses develop an export market, supplies occasional exporters with the tools to grow their international business, and offers current exporters a forum for discussing special issues in export business development. Columbia River Gorge September 20, 2007 - Oregon Business Magazine's "Business is Good" tour will be stopping in two Gorge communities in September. The tour will stop in The Dalles and Hood River on September 25, 2007. Washington D.C., July 17, 2007 - AeA released a report detailing state and national trends in the international trade of high tech goods. Oregon's 2006 tech exports were up 41% from 2005 to a total of $6.9 billion. Washington also showed positive growth in high tech exports, with an increase of 7% to reach $3 billion in tech exports. Hood River, OR May 30, 2007 - The Port of Hood River completed renovation of its Marina Center this spring and moved to new quarters in May.The Port's new address is 1000 East Port Marina Drive. The Marina Center now has about 1,400 square feet available for lease, zoned for commercial uses. The Port is also working to identify a tenant that will help create jobs at its former location which has just over 2,500 square feet of commercially zoned space available. In addition, the Port is considering options for the former maintenance area located on the southwest corner of the marina. Washington D.C. April 24, 2007 - The U.S. added 5.8 million high tech jobs in 2006 according to a report from the American Electronics Association (AEA). December 22 , 2006 - The US Patent Office released their Fiscal Year 2006 progress report. Throughout the year, 96,174 patents were issued to residents of the United States, including utility, design, plant and reissue patents. Among the 50 states, Washington ranks #8 for the largest number of patents issued to its residents in the fiscal year 2006. Washingtonians received a total of 3,253 patents.
